A Christian Gift Store With the Monks’ Touch – Meet the Printery House

Christian Gift StoresIf you’re looking for a Christian gift store where the cards and products have genuine meaning, and a real story behind them, meet the monks at The Printery House.

The Printery House is an apostolic work of the monks and employees of Conception Abbey, a Benedictine monastery situated in the rolling farmlands of northwest Missouri. Their mission is to proclaim the Gospel and share the Christian faith through the creation and distribution of printed products and contemporary religious art.

In choosing a Christian card or gift from The Printery House, you share in the apostolic labors of the monks of Conception Abbey. Since 1873, the Benedictine monks of Conception Abbey have been committed to a life of prayer and work. Five times each day they come together for the Liturgy of the Hours, the public prayers of the church. At midday they gather to celebrate the Eucharist. The rest of the day is devoted to works in service to the church.

Prayer and work is the mission of the Printery House; the beautiful cards and gifts offered by this online Christian gift store are just one demonstration of this mission. In fact, the artists and monks who share their gifts there have been creating hand-lettered and hand-drawn designs for 60 years. Their products have shipped all over the nation and the world, and cards are all printed on-site – coming from one of the few “made in the USA” Christian gift stores.  Together they publish Christian greeting cards, stationery, prayer cards, icons, and other items related to faith.

Some designs are created by monks; others are created by freelance artists. The quality of the art is very important to the continued success of the Printery House, not only by helping retain customer interest through new products, but also by helping spread the Good News of God’s love through the printed word and quality Christian art. The monks also operate and staff Conception Seminary College, where young men come to prepare for priestly service in the Catholic Church.

Sending a Holy card, prayer card or note of encouragement from The Printery House is more than just a card; it’s a message to a friend or loved one that you are sending something you truly believe in. You are also invited to experience the spiritual beauty of the renewed Basilica at Conception Abbey and to visit the AbbeyGuestCenter.

Wooden Crosses to Make Your Home Beautiful

Cross 3

Pewter and Olive Wood

The popularity of Pinterest, the Home and Garden Network and the waterfall of design magazines at nearly every check-out counter seems to indicate that we enjoy decorating our home living spaces. Since the first caveman (perhaps a woman) painted on the walls of the cave, we have been adorning our homes with artwork that says something about who we are and where we’ve been.

This seems pretty natural. Your home is your space. It should mirror things that are important to you. For example, a family we know spent many years in Latin America where silver and pewter are popular. Since they are also believing Christians they enjoyed giving and collecting the ornate metal crosses they discovered there. Now that they live back in the United States, those silver crosses are a reminder of some very precious years, but they are also a mute testimony to others that the Cross of Jesus plays a significant role in their lives.

Here in the United States wood is a popular material for crosses. In the same way that the silver crosses are a beautiful expression of faith, wooden crosses can achieve quite the same effect. They are attractive in themselves and what they declare about your values is equally appealing.

There are many ways to use wooden crosses to make your home beautiful. If you have a stairwell, this is always an interesting place to arrange a montage of any artwork. A collection of wooden crosses of varying size could work especially well in this space.

If you have only a couple of crosses, then you might use them to flank another larger art piece. The crosses could be placed on either side of the piece or, if the piece was not too large, they might work nicely above and below it.

If you have a small, offset wall then this is an interesting space begging for an interesting display. Such walls, when filled with unique objects, become veritable hidden treasures. Visitors feel that they have discovered a secret gem when they come upon it.

But if you are looking for something a bit bolder, then mount your wooden cross on a dark background and surround it with a wide and ornate frame. The juxtaposition of the simple wood of the cross with the highly embellished frame will create something truly eye-catching. You can get a similar, though perhaps less dramatic, effect by painting the wall a striking hue before hanging your cross.

One last idea. If you happen to own a glass topped coffee table with a display shelf, this too can be a terrific place to display your cross. There are really all kinds of possibilities – limited only by the scope of your own imagination. And when someone mentions that your cross looks beautiful, it is the perfect opening to explain how the one who went to the cross makes all things beautiful.

If you are looking for a wooden cross or any kind of Christian wall art, check out The Printery House.

soap

Spring and summer can be exciting times of transition and new beginnings.

Kids graduating from high school will move into college. Kids graduating from college will move into their own apartment. Job transfers often occur over the spring and summer so that kids can start in the new school the following fall.

What that means is that there will be plenty of opportunities to help friends and loved ones get settled into their new homes over the next few months. Housewarming parties are a time-honored way to share in the joy of a new dwelling place. In days gone by, the practice of housewarming was intensely practical as visitors would bring firewood to literally warm the home. Today, it is an opportunity to fill the new home with loved ones, laughter and well wishes.

Symbolic housewarming gifts might include a pineapple or any article emblazoned with a pineapple, since this fruit is said to symbolize welcome. Gifts of bread and salt symbolize abundant supply and are practical food gifts to enjoy. Green plants are also symbolic of life and vitality and make special housewarming gifts. Periwinkle in particular is thought to symbolize long and happy married life. Garden gifts also make terrific housewarming offerings. Garden plaques and planters give a new home the look of an established home.

Religious gifts for women suitable for housewarmings can take many forms. Faith-based artwork for the walls makes a nice welcoming gift. Wall crosses, framed house blessings, and other framed Christian prints usually find a ready spot in the new home. Other religious gifts for women on this occasion include devotional books and CDs of Christian music. Write a personal inscription and the date on the back of your gift and it will always be remembered as part of the welcome.

Whether you choose a practical gift, a symbolic gift, or religious gifts for women, the important thing is to not wait too long to pay a call and take a special housewarming present to say welcome. If there is not an official party, then a visit within the first eight weeks is considered best. When you get ready to go, take a look at The Printery House where you are sure to find many special gift ideas that will help to convey all of your good wishes.
