Love Is Patient, Love Is Kind (I Corinthians 13: 4-7)

Spring is upon us and summer is on the near horizon so soon most of us will be attending at least a few weddings. These are joy-filled occasions for any couple, but when the pair are believers the joy is even greater. That is because as believers their union is even more profound. They are not only joining physically and emotionally, Christians are linking arms spiritually. This is a profound reality and one that deserves nurturing and blessing .

What is a Blessing?
Blessings can be spoken at any time, but they tend to be given at important junctures in life. The Bible is replete with blessings. God spoke a blessing to Adam and Eve after He performed the first marriage. But what exactly is a blessing?

Blessings can be a general statement The blessing of the Lord be on you (Psalm 129:8) or they can be more specific as in Beloved I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers (3 John 1:2). Most often a blessing conveys a promise of future favor, though more recently they have also come to include congratulation or a salute.

God Blesses With Words and so Should His People
God blessed His creation but people in the bible also speak words of blessing. The patriarchs blessed their offspring and God told Aaron to speak a blessing to the people of Israel: The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace (Numbers 6:22-26). Blessing a marriage could mean finding words in scripture which you pray or claim for the newlyweds. You could write those words in your wedding card.

Blessing With Gifts
But blessing a marriage can also come in the form of a religious gift. For example, giving the couple a plaque inscribed with the words Love One Another As I Have Loved You is a way to bless that union. Wall art that bears the words of 1 Corinthians 13 Love is patient, love is kind… or Jesus’ words Give us this day our daily bread are also ways to keep the promises and provisions of God front and center in this newly-formed home.

Today, there are many specialized bible editions including marriage edition bibles. What better way to congratulate the newlyweds and offer them all of God’s good words than with the gift of a personalized marriage edition bible?

Even the ordinary gifts listed on most wedding registries can become a source of blessing when given with the promise or admonition of God. For example, if the couple has registered for flatware or serving pieces then wrap them up with the words of Romans 12:12 Contribute to the needs of the saints and show hospitality.

Blessing a marriage means acknowledging the union in the eyes of the Lord and as part of Christ’s work in the world. If you need a gift or a Christian card to bless a marriage taking place in your life this summer, visit The Printery House today.
