Planning a Way to Show Ministry Appreciation

Preach the Gospel
Preach the Gospel

For those in the community of faith, ministers and volunteer leaders in the church are key figures. These are the people who plan weekly services, run children’s programs, teach and preach the Word or engage in works of mercy among the church body. Their service is motivated by love for Christ and like Him they work sacrificially. But every so often it’s a good idea for the members in the church to express ministry appreciation.

People feel grateful, but they often forget how vital it is to express their thanks. Here are several ways that you or a group within your church could let those who minister among you know how truly appreciative you are for all they do.

Make Them Feel “Treasured”
People in ministry are a valuable treasure. You don’t want them to think that you take them for granted so make it plain how much you appreciate all that they do. Try hosting a Thank You barbecue. Create invitations that are actually a treasure map which will lead them to the party location. When they arrive, let them know that they are the treasure.

Plan Some Active Fun
You might celebrate the leaders in your church by scheduling a day for the ministry team to just have fun together. It could be playing laser tag or swimming at the water park but give them a day to cut loose and enjoy themselves. Be sure to arrange babysitting for those who need it so that it is a grown-up day of fun with no responsibilities.

Hot Dog Roast or Bonfire
If you live in farm country it can be a real treat to plan an evening out under the stars. Ministry appreciation can be a wagon ride from the farmhouse out to a big bonfire. Have hot dogs for roasting or make s’mores. If you live near the beach, plan your evening in the sand. This will be a memorable time for everyone.

Give a Gift
If planning an event is beyond your scope, it’s a great idea to give your ministry leaders a small gift as a token of your appreciation. You might wrap up a Psalter for their personal devotions. A wall cross for their office might be nice. A wall plaque with the words of St Francis of Assisi could also do the trick Preach the Gospel at all times; use words if necessary. Write a note of thanks and the date on the back of the plaque.

Thank You Cards Are Always Appreciated
Sending a Thank You card to express ministry appreciation is always a good idea. Jot a few personal words inside the card. You don’t have to write a long letter, but do let them know some specific ways they have blessed you. If you like, tuck a gift card for coffee or their favorite lunch spot inside the card.

Is ministry appreciation an important concept? The Bible says The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching 1 Timothy 5:17.
